Da Polpo.

Stop press: Wardrobe Wisdom has a new favourite spot in town - inside any one of the Polpo restaurants.

I'm kinda miffed actually, as I was introduced to Polpo in Soho quite a while ago, before all the media and trendy London types cottoned on, and now this post seems a bit of a 'jump on the bandwagon' as I've stumbled across so many gushing reviews in the last month or so. This may because the Polpo group have just opened a new and slightly larger venue in Covent Garden, Da Polpo, which has the same 'dining in Southern Italy at a friend's house' vibe as the original, just on a larger scale. The Soho version would struggle to seat a party larger than four, but Da Polpo has that extra space to squeeze in another couple of grateful friends.

I went with my usual girls, Miss Artist, Miss Champagne and Miss PR. All have very different tastes and eating habits but we struck gold with the Italian tapas-style selections on offer. Some seem a little strange in word form (asparagus and egg, pork and fennel, a Nutella-based dish for dessert) but they are all absolutely delicious and we agreed that although we tried to pick from the breadth of the menu, we could have eaten more still. The wine is served in the Italian way of from tiny tumblers, and you can order by the bottle or carafe, adding to the 'eating abroad' feel.

The whole place (and this is typical of all Polpo restaurants) feels so easy and friendly. And yummy. The staff were fantastic, suggesting favourites, attentive with the wine and amusing to talk to. After you finish you'll wish going round to your friend's house, with the myriad of social and foodie issues that come with your average dinner party, was more like this. Or failing that, just uproot the dinner and go to Da Polpo with friends, that's what it's there for.
